(CN) – President Donald Trump’s approval rating dropped to 42% in the last two weeks of July, a figure on par with how Americans have viewed his job performance throughout his presidency.
The Gallup poll conducted July 15-31 marks a tumultuous period in which Trump launched a Twitter war against four Democratic freshmen members of Congress, stating the women should “go back” to their countries of origin. Trump also tweeted during that period that U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings’ congressional district in Baltimore is “a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.”
And polling occurred while special counsel Robert Mueller testified in Congress about the investigation into Trump’s election campaign’s ties with Russia and Trump’s possible obstruction of that investigation.
Despite frequent controversies within both his administration and re-election campaign, Trump has always maintained an average approval rating between 35% and 46%.
While other presidents have had approval ratings as low or lower than Trump, what distinguishes his ratings from the rest are the lack of very high ratings, Gallup said in a blog post Monday.
The 42% approval rating – collected from Gallup’s interview of 4,500 people – split along party lines with 89% of Republicans and only 7% of Democrats approving of Trump’s performance in the White House.
Trump’s job approval rating among independents stands at 38%, according to the poll.
A majority of non-Hispanic whites, 53%, approve of Trump’s actions as president. Only 25% of Hispanics and 14% of non-Hispanic black respondents approve, the poll found.
Gallup found the gender gap in Trump’s approval ratings remains wide, with 51% of men approving of his performance as president and only 34% of women evaluating his actions positively.
Nearly half of Americans, 49%, aged 50 and older approve of Trump’s presidential actions, while only 36% of Americans younger than 50 do so.
