CHICAGO (CN) - A gynecologist was sentenced to 18 years in prison for raping a patient who was eight months pregnant.

Bruce Sylvester Smith was sentenced Tuesday for two counts of criminal sexual assault.

He raped the pregnant woman in 2002 but was not arrested until 2010.

Prosecutors acknowledged that mistakes were made during the investigation because Smith's DNA sample was never taken.

Smith was providing prenatal care to the 31-year-old woman when he raped her at an exam. He claimed the sex was consensual.

Smith's medical license was suspended in 2009 and several other women accused him of sexual misconduct, according to The Associated Press.

Smith's medical license was revoked in 2011 for unrelated reasons. He was not charged for the other women's complaints.
