CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. (CN) - A small southeastern Missouri community banned trick-or-treating and then reversed its decision less than 24 hours later.

The Caruthersville city council voted Wednesday night to prohibit door-to-door trick-or-treating, citing safety concerns, The Associated Press reported.

As an alternative, the city offered a "Trunk of Treat" event at the Caruthersville Public Safety Center.

But after a swift reaction, the city leaders decided Thursday afternoon to allow door-to-door trick-or-treating as long as the children have a responsible adult with them, according to the AP.

Caruthersville, population 6,168, is 195 miles south of St. Louis.
