School Officials Accused of Swiping $4 Million

BEAUMONT, Texas (CN) - Federal prosecutors charged Beaumont (Texas) Independent School District's finance director and comptroller with stealing $4 million from the district.

A federal grand jury returned the indictment Wednesday, charging David Wayne McCraney, 35, and Sharikah Baksh Allison, 43, both of Beaumont, with conspiracy and 18 counts of fraud, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement.

"Beginning in 2010, McCraney, director of finance for BISD, and Allison, comptroller for BISD, are alleged to have devised schemes in which they embezzled $4,041,705.27 from BISD by means of 18 separate wire transfers to bank accounts under their personal control," prosecutors said.

If convicted, they face up to 10 years in federal prison.
