ST. LOUIS (CN) - A boxing promoter claims Don King Productions intentionally interfered with its representation of heavyweight Walter Tyeson Fields, after the fighter's original promoter had spent more than half a million dollars on him.
Capital Promotions says it signed Fields to a 5-year contract from Feb. 4, 2000 to Feb. 4, 2005. During that time, Capital says, Don King Productions unsuccessfully tried to lure Fields away from it.
At the same time, Fields' manager Billy Baxter cut off communication with Capital and caused a cell phone and vehicle Capital had issued to Fields to be abandoned and vandalized with $3,000 in damages, according to the federal complaint.
Capital says Baxter deliberately withheld money owed to Capital for Fields' training and tired to schedule fights in violation of Capital's agreement.
Capital Fields and Baxter signed with Don King Productions in February 2005. It claims King was aware of Capital's contract with Fields and knew or should have known that Capital expected its relationship with Fields to continue.
Capital seeks punitive damages for conspiracy, prima facie tort and interference with contract.
