SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CN) - Illinois House Democrats chose David Ellis to present the case against Gov. Rod Blagojevich in his impeachment trial in the state Senate. Ellis, who called it a "solemn honor," prepared a report that led to a 114-1 House vote in favor of impeachment. Ellis is the House counsel and a top aide to House Speaker Michael Madigan, a Democrat from Chicago.
Federal prosecutors accuse Blagojevich of trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama to the highest bidder.
Blagojevich on Jan. 8 became the state's first governor to be impeached. His trial is to begin later this month.
