ST. LOUIS (CN) - A CNN commentator's criticism of China's hosting the Olympic Games caused a Chinese-born man mental anguish, Shen Wang says in a pro se claim in Federal Court.
CNN commentator Jack Cafferty called the Chinese a "bunch of goons and thugs" and described Chinese products as "junk" in the CNN program, "The Situation Room," on April 9, Wang's claim states.
Wang claims he has suffered from fear he would be treated differently at work and at school because of the comments.
Wang, a full-time employee at AT&T and a part-time student at Washington University, says CNN's coverage of the torch relay protests and Cafferty's comments constitute racial and national-origin discrimination against the Chinese, which is prohibited by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Wang wants CNN enjoined from employing Cafferty as a commentator, a formal apology, a declaration that Cafferty's comments were defamatory, and damages.
