SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CN) - A bill that would allow adopted adults to get copies of their adoption records failed after anti-abortion lawmakers said it could lead to an increase in abortions.
Lawmakers claimed that giving adoptees greater access to the information would discourage women from carrying their pregnancies to term, due to the lack of privacy. The bill failed by 58-52 vote.
The bill would have given the information only to the adult adoptee, under certain criteria. Supporters said it struck a balance between privacy rights of the biological mother and the rights of adoptees to know their family histories.
