BUFFALO, N.Y. — A bi-racial patient born with a single shrunken kidney is suing his doctors in federal court in New York because, while awaiting a transplant, he noticed that the algorithms his the doctors used to assess his kidney health differed depending on whether he was categorized as Black or non-Black. He claims the algorithm adds on a race-specific multiplier to Black patients that makes them appear healthier than they are, meaning Black people have to reach a much more severe level of kidney disease to qualify for certain treatments.
