ST. LOUIS (CN) - St. Louis is still No. 1 in reported rates of two sexually transmitted diseases - gonorrhea and chlamydia. It is the second consecutive year that the city garnered the dubious honor.
In 2007, doctors reported 742 cases of gonorrhea and 1,265 cases of chlamydia for every 100,000 residents - almost 7,000 new diagnoses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta.
That was 500 fewer cases than 2006, but is still the highest rates in the country. When the entire metropolitan area is included, St. Louis' rate drops to eighth in both gonorrhea and chlamydia infection rates. That's an improvement from fifth and sixth, respectively, in 2006.
