JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (CN) - Dell will pay $3.4 million to settle complaints from 34 states whose residents complained of its promotional and customer service practices. Dell will pay customers $1.5 million in restitution and another $1.85 million to the states.
The State of Missouri will get $75,000 from the settlement.
Dell customers complained about a variety of issues, including misleading promotions that promised better financing than Dell actually offered. Some customers had trouble obtaining warranty service and others said they never received the rebates they were promised.
Dell agreed to change its business practices to state clearly that most consumers will not qualify for the best-available interest rates, agreed to fulfill its warranty obligations more promptly, provide customers with all paperwork necessary to qualify for rebates, and process rebate checks more promptly.
