JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (CN) - Wal-Mart will pay more than $1.25 million to settle claims that it violated Missouri's Hazardous Waste Management Law, Missouri's attorney general said.
Wal-Mart sent household products, including herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals that were returned or could not be sold to two sites in Neosho, Mo., for disposal by Greenleaf LLC, Attorney General Chris Koster said in a statement. But Greenleaf did not have a permit for hazardous waste disposal and did not properly manage the waste materials, Koster said.
Wal-Mart will pay Missouri $214,378 in civil penalties, spend $1.05 million to sponsor pesticide-collection events in rural Missouri and reimburse the Department of Natural Resources $4,082 for the investigation. Wal-Mart already has spent $3 million to clean up the two sites.
