These rolling hills in Walnut Creek, California, turn from green in the winter to golden in the summer. The city administers four open space areas that cover more than 3,000 acres with miles of hiking trails. The areas provide recreation for people and corridors for wildlife to pass through a valley northeast of San Francisco that is home to more than 200,000 people.
