(CN) - The U.S. Olympic Committee wants to block a trademark application filed by The Olympian daily newspaper of Olympia, Wash., claiming "The Olympian" name will "falsely suggest a connection" between the newspaper and the Olympic Games.
The committee filed an opposition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, arguing that readers could easily confuse the newspaper's mark with Olympic marks, and that its reputation will be harmed if the newspaper does not "meet the strict quality standards consumer's normally associate with the Olympic Games."
The application was filed by newspaper owner McClatchy U.S.A. in 2006, after it bought the newspaper from Knight Ridder.
The Olympian was first published as The Daily Olympian in 1889.
