CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The United States and West Virginia are seeking an injunction against 26 coal mining companies that are fouling the region's water. The companies, including Patriot Coal and Magnum Coal, have permits to dump coal slurry into streams and rivers, but the government claims they have exceeded their limits.
The government seeks an injunction and civil penalties against Magnum of up to $27,500 per day for each violation.
