WASHINGTON (CN) - A group of 11 senators has reached a consensus on the public option, breaking an impasse, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Tuesday night. Though he did not provide details, he said the bill includes a public option.
"It is a consensus that includes a public option and will help ensure the American people win in two ways," he said of the agreement between 10 Democratic senators and himself. "One, insurance companies will face more competition, and two, the American people will have more choices."
Pundits are speculating that the public option might not be government-run, or that it has somehow been weakened.
Reid said he is waiting until the Congressional Budget Office evaluates the new terms before he gives details.
