ALBUQUERQUE (CN) - A public school district claims its business manager embezzled $3.4 million in six years. Jemez Mountain School District sued Kathy Borrego, the Accounting & Consulting Group, an independent auditor that failed to catch the embezzlement, and three friends to whom Borrego allegedly wrote checks from school district accounts.
The school district claims Borrego wrote large checks to herself and her cohorts, forging the required pair of authorizing signatures.
A state audit put the total embezzlement at $3,378,710, according to the complaint in Bernalillo County Court.
The district and The New Mexico Public School Insurance Authority seek damages for fraud, negligence, conspiracy breach of contract and other charges.
Also named as defendants are Jerry Archuleta, Andrew Duran and Rosana Lopez.
The district is represented by Stephen French.
