The Porcupine caribou herd crosses a river on the coastal plain of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The coastal plain is the biological heart of the Refuge and a calving and nursing grounds for the 200,000 herd. In 2017, The Trump Admistration opened the coastal plain to industrial oil and gas development. Caribou biologists and Gwich'in elders believe the potential development is a theat to the health of the herd and also a threat to the culture and subsistence lifestyle of the Gwich'in caribou people.
