WASHINGTON (CN) - Seven thousand dolphins and porpoises may be legally harassed, injured or killed this year by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, according to an application to amend its Commerce Department marine mammal research permit.
New Jersey has requested an increase in the number of dolphins it may bother, injure or kill as it studies where whales, sea lions, seals and sea turtles live within 20 nautical miles of its southern shore. An environmental assessment found "No Significant Impact," under the original permit, but a supplemental environmental assessment is likely required for the amended permit. The Commerce Department must receive any public comments before May 9 for them to be considered. Click here for details and other new notices and regulations.
