Mass Layoffs Hit All-Time High in United States

(CN) - In the fourth quarter of 2008, 3,140 extended mass layoff events resulted in 508,859 separations. Both figures reached their highest levels in program history. Separations due to slack work more than tripled from a year earlier. The construction and manufacturing industries had record highs in both layoff events and separations.
