LAS VEGAS (CN) - The deputy U.S. marshal hit in the arm during Monday's shootout at the Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse was identified as Joe Gardner, a 24-year veteran with the U.S. Marshals Service.
Officials say Gardner, 48, was released from the hospital Tuesday and is recovering at home.
Gardner was shot by Johnny Lee Wicks, who set fire to his condo early in the morning, walked three miles to the courthouse and began firing his shotgun inside the lobby of the courthouse, killing security officer Stanley Cooper, 72.
The gunfight spilled out into the streets. Officials fired 81 rounds at Wicks, who was fatally shot in the head across the street from the courthouse.
