NEW ORLEANS (CN) - The Jefferson Parish council is doing its best, or worst, to exacerbate New Orleans' housing crisis, Richard and Thelma Berry claim in Federal Court. The Berrys say Jefferson Parish violated their civil rights by calling an emergency meeting to rezone their $1.2 million commercial property as residential when councilmen learned they were building a retirement home on it.
Councilman Chris Roberts allegedly said, "You would be having folks in Orleans Parish who lived in public housing complexes enter Jefferson Parish. That's just not something I'm interested in." The Berrys claim the Parish's action is discriminatory, unfair, unconstitutional, and violates the Fair Housing Act. They are represented by John Davidson or Matairie. See complaint.
