BROOKLYN (CN) – The New York City Elections Board illegally removed Ruben Wills’ name from the ballot for Sept. 9 Democratic primary for the 6th Congressional District, his supporters claim in Federal Court. The 10 black plaintiffs say the Board and the New York Supreme Court cheated Wills, who also is black, by improperly invalidating thousands of signatures on his nominating petitions.
Plaintiffs say they submitted 4,813 signatures on nominating petitions for Wills, and that only 1,581 were required. They say the defendant Board improperly invalidated thousands of signatures, but found that Wills still had enough to qualify for the ballot – 1,581. Then the New York Supreme Court invalidated another 389 signatures, also on spurious grounds, throwing Wills off the ballot.
They want Wills listed on the ballot, and costs. They are represented by Neil Grimaldi of Bronx.
