WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. Health Department seeks specific input on how to prevent a flu pandemic, a worldwide outbreak of a new virus for which people have little or no immunity.
A vaccine likely will not be available when a potential pandemic starts because the strain has to be identified and then the vaccine developed and produced. So, the Health Department has issued guidance documents on what should be done in the meantime.
The subjects of new guidance documents, for which the department would like input, are: facemask and respirator use and stockpiling for households, antiviral drugs, and antiviral drug stockpiling for employers. Any comments must be submitted on or before July 3.
