Environmentalists Challenge Logging|In Lassen National Forest

SACRAMENTO (CN) – The U.S. Forest Service violated environmental laws by approving the Champs Project, which will log 7,500 acres – 12 square miles – and build 2.3 miles of roads in Lassen National Forest, the Earth Island Institute claims in Federal Court.

Plaintiff claims the logging will damage old-growth forest which is habitat for the protected California spotted owl and northern goshawk.
It demands an injunction preventing logging of any timber with a diameter greater than 12 inches, and a proper environmental impact report.
The logging project is in the Eagle Lake District in Lassen National Forest.
