WASHINGTON (CN) - Doctors will be able to write prescriptions for narcotics and other controlled substances electronically, according to new Drug Enforcement Administration regulations.
Pharmacies also will be able to receive, dispense and archive the prescriptions. The rules are effective June 1.
The DEA intends for the closed system of controls on dispensing the prescriptions to remain. These regulations are in addition to, not a replacement of, the existing rules.
The agency anticipates that the regulations will reduce paperwork and may reduce prescription forgery.
