MANHATTAN (CN) - A former petty officer in the Colombian Navy was extradited to the United States on charges of conspiring to sell navigation charts showing the positions of U.S. and Colombian Navy and Coast Guard ships to cocaine traffickers.
Otoniel Ricardo Cabarcas Avendano, 45, arrived in New York last week to join his co-defendant, Eduardo Jaramillo, 55. They are accused of selling the naval charts to cocaine traffickers from 2002 or 2003 until they were indicted, in October 2007. The drug smugglers allegedly used the charts to facilitate their smuggling of tons of cocaine. Jaramillo was a military contractor. He owned a company that supplied uniforms to the Colombian Coast Guard.
