Coast Guard to Align Boating Databases

WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. Coast Guard has changed terminology in three boating databases, to allow for cross-referencing among them, according to new regulations.

The Coast Guard must keep a numbering system covering documented and undocumented vessels, by statute. It also receives information from states on boating accidents.

The changes are meant to align and modernize terminology used in the Standard Numbering System, the Vessel Identification System, and accident reporting.

This rule also requires verification of vessel hull identification numbers, requires Standard Numbering System vessel owners to provide personally identifiable information, and provides flexibility for states and territories in administering the regulations.

The changes are intended to improve boating safety efforts, enhance law enforcement capabilities, clarify requirements for all stakeholders, and promote the Coast Guard strategic goals of maritime safety and security, he coast Guard states in the preamble to the changed regulations.
