BOSTON (CN) – The Massachusetts Senate approved a bill allowing Gov. Deval Patrick to appoint an interim replacement for the late Sen. Teddy Kennedy. The move could give Democrats the 60th vote they need to block Republican filibusters on health care legislation.
Kennedy’s seat was to have stayed empty until a special election in January. Before he died last month, Kennedy asked the Legislature to change the law to allow a temporary Senator to fill-in until the special election.
The Massachusetts House of Representatives approved the measure last week. It was expected to land on the governor’s desk today – Wednesday.
