Biden taps four for Eastern courts

Biden's appointees must still be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

WASHINGTON (CN) — President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced four judicial nominees for Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland and the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The announcement brings the total number of judicial nominees during Biden’s tenure to 240.

Biden nominated U.S. Magistrate Judge Embry Kidd to the 11th Circuit, which covers Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

Since 2019, Kidd has been a magistrate judge for the Middle District of Florida, where he previously worked as an assistant U.S. attorney. Kidd worked in private practice at Williams & Connolly LLP in Washington, D.C.

He received his undergraduate degree from Emory University and his law degree from Yale Law School.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Adam Abelson was nominated for the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, where he’s been on the bench since 2023.

Abelson previously worked in private practice at Zuckerman Spaeder LLP. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his law degree from New York University School of Law.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph Saporito Jr. was nominated for the District Court of the Middle District of Pennsylvania, where he’s served since 2015. Before his appointment to the bench, Saporito spent 30 years as a part-time assistant public defender for Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, while working at Saporito & Saporito and Saporito, Saporito & Falcone.

Saporito received his bachelor’s degree from Villanova University and his law degree from Dickinson School of Law.

And Biden gave the nod to Judge Meredith Vacca, who has served on the Monroe County, New York, Court since 2021, for the Western District of New York. She also has been an acting justice on the New York Supreme Court since 2023.

Vacca previously served as an assistant district attorney in Monroe County, New York, after a stint in private practice at Hamberger & Weiss LLP.

Vacca received her bachelor’s degree from Colgate University and her law degree from the University of Buffalo School of Law.
