Biden administration puts $7 billion toward regional clean hydrogen hubs

The money will support 206,217 construction and 105,553 permanent jobs.

(CN) — The Biden administration on Friday announced seven regional clean hydrogen hubs will receive a total of $7 billion to create more than 105,000 permanent jobs.

President Joe Biden announced the recipients of the funding under the bipartisan infrastructure law at an event in Philadelphia.

“Today’s announcement is transformational,” he said. “For the first time in a long time we’re actually investing in America. … We’re investing in our future.”

The money will augment $40 billion in private investment in clean hydrogen, the White House said. The hubs are not single facilities, but are a variety of linked assets working together to develop domestic hydrogen.

Collectively, the facilities are expected to produce more than 3 million metric tons of clean hydrogen per year. Officials said the energy source will reduce emissions in “hard-to-decarbonize sectors” like chemical, steel and cement manufacturing. Biden said wind and solar power don’t generate enough power to support industrial work.

“Unlocking the full potential of hydrogen—a versatile fuel that can be made from almost any energy resource in virtually every part of the country—is crucial to achieving President Biden’s goal of American industry powered by American clean energy, ensuring less volatility and more affordable energy options for American families and businesses,” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said in a press release.

“With this historic investment, the Biden-Harris Administration is laying the foundation for a new, American-led industry that will propel the global clean energy transition while creating high quality jobs and delivering healthier communities in every pocket of the nation.”

In total, the hubs will support 206,217 construction and 105,553 permanent jobs.

“Those hubs are about people coming together across state lines, across industries and across political parties to build a stronger, more sustainable economy,” Biden said.

Hubs in California and Texas will receive the most funding, a $1.2 billion each.

The Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems will use its money for the California Hydrogen Hub. The project will support 130,000 construction and 90,000 permanent jobs.

“Today we are moving from concept to reality — advancing clean, renewable hydrogen in California which is essential to meeting our climate goals,” California Governor Gavin Newsom said in a press release. “California’s Hydrogen Hub will cut pollution, power our clean energy economy and create hundreds of thousands of good paying jobs.”

HyVelocity is using the funding for a Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub based in Texas. It will support 35,000 construction and 10,000 permanent jobs.

The Midwest Hydrogen Hub, led by Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen, will serve Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. It will receive $1 billion and support 12,100 construction and 1,500 permanent jobs.

PNW H2 is receiving $1 billion for the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub, serving Washington, Oregon and Montana. It will create 8,050 construction and 350 permanent jobs.

The Appalachian Hydrogen Hub is receiving $925 million to serve West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. It will create 18,000 construction and 3,000 permanent jobs.

Another $925 million will boost the Heartland Hydrogen Hub, serving Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. It will create 3,067 construction and 703 permanent jobs.

The final project is the Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub, which will serve Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey. It will receive $750 million and support 14,400 construction and 6,400 permanent jobs.
