SEATTLE (CN) - China Airlines claims it damaged a Boeing 747 by removing sealant on the outside of the aircraft according to the instructions in Boeing's maintenance manual. The manual gave detailed instructions on how to scrape sealant from the exterior of the plane's fuselage skin, China Air claims in King County Court.
About five years later, China Air says it inspected the plane and noticed "scribe mark damage" where the sealant had been removed. The damage created a significant risk that the fuselage skin would "catastrophically fail," so the airline sold the plane back to Boeing at a $7.5 million loss.
