With dusk deepening, Lassen Peak pokes above the hills ringing Juniper Lake in Lassen Volcanic National Park, August 2011. The southernmost volcano in the Cascades and the largest plug-dome volcano in the world, Lassen Peak erupted in 1915 after 27,000 years of dormancy. It sent a plume of volcanic ash and gas 30,000 feet into the air that could be seen 150 miles away. (Courthouse News photo / William Dotinga)
