CHICAGO (CN) - Spin Master Ltd., of Canada, imported "Aqua Dots" toys from China, which are coated with the chemical 1,4-butanediol that, upon being ingested, turns into the "date rape drug" gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, a class-action complaint claims in Federal Court. Spin Master allegedly had 4.2 million of the toys for young childrenmade in China since April, using 1,4-butanediol because the nontoxic chemical 1,5-pentanediol is three to seven times more expensive. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled the toys on Nov. 7. See complaint.
