WASHINGTON (CN) -The Internal Revenue Service has issued regulations prohibiting tax preparers from sharing certain tax return information without taxpayer consent. The information may not be disclosed or used as of Jan. 1, 2009. The new rules also clarify that "tax preparers" include tax preparation software companiesthat receive information when purchases are registered.
Preparers still may disclose information to report a crime, collect tax preparation fees, and prepare lists for solicitation of tax return business, among other things. Click here for details and other new regulations.
