SANTA ANA (CN) - A California appeals court threw out a lawsuit seeking reimbursement for money the state paid to the Los Angeles Unified School District under false claims for new school construction.
Plaintiffs Dennis and Christopher Dockstader lost their bid to sue the district on behalf of the state, but claimed the district's employees who submitted the false claims are fair game.
The justices concluded that employees of a public agency, acting in the scope of their employment, are not proper defendants under the California False Claims Act.
