Mormon Memorabilia Dealer Charged|$190,000 For A Forgery, Man Says

PROVO (CN) - A man claims that Mormon memorabilia dealer Matthew J. Kennedy sold him an 1830 Book of Mormon, with a forged signature of Joseph Smith, for $190,000. The plaintiff claims the item is "a Mark Hoffman forgery."

He demands his money back from Kennedy, Legacy Reserve and LDS Living.

Plaintiff Weston Wade Sleater is represented in Utah County Court by Ronald George of Salt Lake City.

(Mark Hoffman is a forger and murderer who specialized in phony Mormon documents. As his forgeries unraveled in 1985, he killed two people with bombs, crimes to which he confessed to avoid the death penalty, according to contemporary press reports. He is serving a life sentence.)
