CHICAGO (CN) - Advocate Lutheran General Hospital will pay $8.25 million to a couple whose baby died from a fatal dose of nutrients in an IV. A Cook County judge approved the settlement Thursday.
Fritzie and Cameron Burkett's 6-week-old son, Genesis, died in October 2011.
Genesis was mistakenly given 60 times the prescribed dose of sodium chloride, The Associated Press reported.
A series of errors led to the fatal dose, including a pharmacy technician entering incorrect information, an inactivated alert system and a lab technician assuming a blood test result was wrong.
The Burkett's attorney, Patrick Salvi, told the AP that Genesis' death could have been avoided and that the hospital already has changed its policies to prevent such incidents.
