CHICAGO (CN) - A gang leader was sentenced to 28 years in prison for distributing "staggering amounts of crack cocaine, heroin and marijuana," federal prosecutors said.
Victor Thompson, 51, a longtime leader of the Gangster Disciples, oversaw distribution of more than 13,500 kilograms of crack cocaine, 740 kilograms of heroin, and 425,412 kilograms of marijuana in poor areas of the South Side from 1997 until he was arrested in 2007, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. A loaded gun with a defaced serial number was found in his bedroom when he was arrested, prosecutors said.
He was accused of controlling a drug ring, including gang members and others, whom he charged "street taxes" to deal drugs.
Another gang member told police that Thompson used informants to report how much drug dealers were making, and enforced his taxes through violence and torture.
Thompson pleaded guilty in 2009, but his sentencing was delayed repeatedly at his request.
