SANFORD, Fla. (CN) - The wife of Trayvon Martin's killer George Zimmerman pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor perjury charge and was placed on probation for a year.
Shellie Zimmerman admitted she lied under oath in April 2012 when she said she and her husband did not have enough money to pay her husband's bond.
A jury acquitted George Zimmerman in July of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges. His attorneys claimed he killed Martin in self-defense.
The Zimmermans spoke in code on the phone about having more than $100,000.
As a part of her plea deal Shellie Zimmerman had to write a letter of apology to the judge, will be on probation for one year and must complete 100 hours of community service.
Shellie Zimmerman's letter of apology to Seminole County Judge Kenneth Lester, dated Wednesday, Aug. 28, stated, inter alia: "I would like to take the opportunity to apologize to you for lying under oath. On April 20, 2012, I testified my husband and I had no money to put towards a bond. At that time, we could have paid for a bond out of contributions to my husband's legal fund. I was aware that what I was saying was not true and chose to take a path that I now regret with all my heart."
George Zimmerman was not in court with his wife Wednesday.
