Zika Has Spread to Miami Beach, Sources Say

(CN) — The Zika virus has jumped from mainland Miami-Dade County to Miami Beach, according to a news report from Miami.

The Miami Herald reported that a new Zika transmission has been identified in Miami Beach and that officials will release details of a new transmission zone within the city.

Local officials and code compliance officers were already conducting inspections for mosquito breeding sites, the newspaper said.

According to the New York Times, a "cluster of Zika cases" were likely contracted in the area, though the outlet's source spoke under the condition of anonymity due to a pending announcement that will occur late Thursday or early Friday.

Neither the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention nor the Florida Department of Health has released information on the cases or the exact location in Miami Beach.

A one-square mile section of Wynwood — a neighborhood in north Miami — has been declared an active Zika transmission zone, and the CDC has advised pregnant women to stay away from the area.

Florida officials had tied 25 of the 35 locally transmitted Zika cases to a single area in Wynwood as of Wednesday.
