Yellowstone Snowmobile Limit Still at 318

WASHINGTON (CN) - The National Park Service will extend, for the third year in a row, temporary limits on the number and type of snowmobiles allowed in Yellowstone National Park. Seventy-eight snowcoaches and 318 snowmobiles will be allowed in the park each day.

The NPS had hoped to issue permanent rules on snow vehicle use in the parks by this month, but said that it had received over 58,000 comments on a Draft Environmental Impact Statement on its preferred rules, and needs to look at several facets of the rule, including varying preset use limits, air quality and modeling assumptions and what constitutes the best available technology for snowcoaches.

The rules require that most recreational snowmobiles in the park meet air and sound emissions requirements, that snowmobilers and snowcoach riders be accompanied by a commercial guide, and that the vehicles stay on designated routes.

The makes of snowmobiles that meet the air and sound requirements are Cat, Bombardier, Polaris and Yamaha, according to the NPS Web site.
