MANHATTAN (CN) - The New York Yankees bamboozled fans on a pricey offer for authentic seats from the old Yankee Stadium before it was demolished, a class action claims in Federal Court. Lead plaintiff John Lefkus says he paid more than $2,000 to buy the seats where he sat as 23-year season ticketholder, but the Bronx Bombers sent him two random seats assembled from different parts and repainted.
The Yankees claimed that for $1,500 nostalgic fans could buy a pair of "unspecified but authentic, unrefurbished Yankee seats." To buy specific souvenir seats, the ball club charged an extra $500.
Despite authentication certificates and "tamper-proof MLB holograms" guaranteeing that the seats were not refurbished, Lefkus says that the seats were dismantled haphazardly during demolition "and later reassembled without regard to which seat parts went with which seats."
Lefkus says the seats he got include new and old hardware, have different armrests, and were stripped and repainted in the wrong color.
Defendant Steiner Sports put the wrong seat number on one of the new seats and tried to pass off a distinctly non-aisle seat as an aisle seat, Lefkus alleges.
The class seeks more than $5 million in damages from the Yankees, Steiner Sports Memorabilia, Steiner Sports Marketing and Yankee-Steiner Collectibles, alleging false advertising, deceptive practices and breach of warranty.
