Wyoming High Court OK’s State Education System

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (CN) - The Wyoming Legislature has sufficiently enacted laws that ensure all school children are entitled to a "thorough and efficient" education, the Wyoming Supreme Court ruled.

As part of a statewide effort to eliminate wealth-based disparities in Wyoming's school system, the Legislature passed laws to fund education from state wealth and gave that money to local school districts in a block grant.

"The level of trust the Legislature has placed in the people of Wyoming is admirable and certainly one important reason that it has achieved so much since 2001," the court wrote.

When a group of school districts challenged whether the Legislature's efforts met the constitutional mandate, the high court backed lawmakers.

"Some deficiencies exist, some changes are required and new issues will arise," the court noted, but said it is "satisfied that the Legislature has in place a thorough and efficient educational structure funded from state wealth as required by our state constitution." See ruling.
