PHILADELPHIA (CN) - Three wrestlers say they were infected with herpes virus because York College of Pennsylvania coaches let team members wrestle with active lesions. Herpes simplex 1 is sometimes called herpes gladitorium because it is spread in athletics contests.
They say the virus ran rampant in the team due to full-contact wrestling with infected team members, beginning with just one.
Plaintiffs say NCAA rules call for "120 hours of antiviral therapy" before an infected athlete can return, but York required infected athletes to sit out for just three days, then returned them to practice with bandages over the lesions.
The plaintiffs demand monetary damages for negligence. They are represented in state court by David Avedissian of Haddonfield, N.J.
