HOUSTON (CN) - When Sprint Communications hired a promoter to fly a "Sprint Balloon" over a strip mall, the promoter tethered it to an air-conditioning and heating unit atop a nearby restaurant without bothering to ask for permission, the restaurateur says. On a windy day, the balloon ripped the unit from its foundations and cut its gas supply line, filling the restaurant with gas, forcing evacuation and closure and threatening to set the place afire, according to a complaint in Harris County Court.
Tommy's Restaurant Management seeks punitive damages from Sprint and Houston Balloons and Promotions.
"The January winds blew but neither Houston Balloons nor Sprint deflated or even bothered to inspect or monitor Sprint's promotional balloon," the complaint states. Tommy's says it didn't even know the damn thing was tied to its roof.
