SAN DIEGO (CN) - Calling him "the worst of the worst," a federal judge Monday sentenced a pediatric nurse to 80 years in prison for sexually abusing a 2-month-old premature boy and an 11-month-old girl.
Michael William Lutts, 52, of San Diego, was a foster parent to the children he abused.
U.S. District Judge John Houston sentenced him to 15 more years than the prosecutor asked, saying, "He should never see the light of day. Rehabilitation would be futile."
The judge said he would not recommend any psychological treatment for Lutts in prison, because "taxpayers shouldn't waste their money on treatment."
Lutts pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, and to possession of child pornography. He also must forfeit his home, where he committed most of his crimes.
U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy called it " one of most appalling, heart-wrenching cases I have seen ... a whole new level of depravity."
