Working Group Created for Natural Gas Sources

WASHINGTON (CN) - President Barack Obama has created an Interagency Working Group to Support Safe and Responsible Development of Unconventional Domestic Natural Gas Resources. The group is to coordinate the efforts of federal agencies to regulate exploration and development of unconventional sources of natural gas.

The working group will be chaired by the Director of the Domestic Policy Council with membership from almost all cabinet level agencies.

The working group will advise the president on policies to safely and efficiently exploit unconventional sources of natural gas and to make sure information about the locations of these reserves and the methods used to extract them is widely available.

In the executive order creating the working group, Obama said that natural gas accounted for 25 percent of the energy consumed by the United States in 2011. The figure is likely to rise as stringent emissions standards limit construction of new coal fired power plants and technology makes extraction of once untouchable natural gas pockets more efficient.
