LOS ANGELES (CN) - Singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette violated labor laws by making an employee work without meal breaks and overtime, and fired her when she complained, the woman claims in court.
Sheila Dos Santos sued the Canadian-American rock star and her husband Mario Treadway on Oct. 2 in Superior Court.
Dos Santos seeks damages for wrongful discharge, labor law violations, unpaid wages, infliction of emotional distress and unfair business practices.
In an 11-page complaint that's short on detail, Dos Santos claims she worked for Morissette for four years.
During that time, Dos Santos says, she worked more than 5 hours a day without a break, and more than 8 hours a day without overtime pay.
She claims that when she complained about her working conditions Treadway and Morissette "created a hostile and disparate working environment" that led to her constructive discharge.
"Specific examples of the discriminatory and hostile conduct include, without limitation, the use of verbal abuse; lack of support and training; being labeled as a 'trouble maker' and treated as an outcast; and ultimately wrongful termination," the lawsuit states.
Dos Santos claims that Morissette and her husband did not investigate her complaints, and "frustrated" further inquiry.
Dos Santos' attorney Jason Pollack did not respond Friday to a request for comment.
