PORTLAND, ORE. (CN) - Reed College fired him for objecting to his boss's orders to destroy "as many as a thousand used hypodermic needles, heroin scales, and other drug paraphernalia, and miscellaneous weapons" found in a Reed College apartment, without notifying police, Josh Chambers claims in Multnomah County Court. His boss told him the matter should be handled "the Reed way."
Chambers claims the college violated workplace safety laws and employment law by firing him. He claims that when he refused to "destroy said evidence," his boss, Michael O'Brien, "accused him of 'black and white' thinking and advised him that the matter needed to be handled the 'Reed' way, such that this information did not reach the authorities. ... O'Brien took the evidence and apparently destroyed it himself," Chambers says.
He claims he was unfairly disciplined and eventually fired for protesting the way the October 2006 incident was handled.
